Description

Experts OnDemand: Meet the bebionic by Ottobock and the Myo Plus pattern recognition system

This course is part of our Experts OnDemand series. This is for informational purposes, and is not a qualification course.

Ottobock is excited to announce its newest advancement in upper limb prosthetics, the Myo Plus pattern recognition system. Designed for transradial users, Myo Plus represents a new paradigm in the control of a myoelectric prosthesis. Instead of only using two myo-sites as with conventional myoelectric control, up to eight pairs of electrodes are used to capture movement patterns of the muscles working together in the residual limb. Each pattern is then assigned to control a specific prosthetic function. The system adapts to the user’s natural movements versus requiring the user to adapt to the system. Offering direct, convenient control of the prosthesis without requiring any switching mechanisms and the ability to fine-tune adjustments via an app, Myo Plus was designed with both the user and prosthetist in mind.

This course will provide a one hour overview of the Myo Plus system. Features, functions and benefits will be presented, along with system operation and compatibility. The latest updates to the Ottobock bebionic hand will be highlighted, along with differences in user operation when fit in combination with the Myo Plus system. Clinical application will be discussed to ensure this technology is applied to the correct type of user. The fitting process will be outlined and online resources identified where clinicians can obtain Myo Plus certification and/or further training, helpful videos and informational documents.

Learning Objectives:

  • To identify bebionic features, functions, and 14 available grips and hand positions.
  • To recognize the updates that Ottobock has made to the bebionic hand.
    • To gain a basic understanding of the difference between two-site conventional myoelectric control versus pattern recognition.
  • To identify Myo Plus features, functions, and user benefits.
  • To understand the equipment and procedure required for a Myo Plus trial and how to obtain certification and/or further training resources.
